How Common Men Shall Be Armed: Equipment of the Common Soldier of England 1450 to 1500

The armaments of common soldiers in the Late Medieval Period of England is often an overlooked and understudied aspect of the military activities of the kingdom. Armies made up of such men were a vital part of the defense of the realm. Despite the stereotype of being poorly equipped, we have evidence to suggest many troops were armed and armoured to a meaningful degree, painting a much different picture of England’s home defence than previously accepted in the wider academic community.​
